After purchasing two Hobie Mirage Kayaks, 2007 Adventure Island, and 2007 Revolution13, for getting out on the water and exercise, I saw a few people fishing from kayaks in 2008. At 48 years old and not being much of an angler prior, I decided to try and fish from my kayaks. The first few years I learned to target Bass, Pike, Walleye, Muskie, Yellow Perch, Sturgeon, Steelhead, and Salmon. In 2009 and 2010 I participated in a few kayak fishing events. In 2011 I started the “Border City Classic” on Lake St Clair, which eventually became a qualifier for the Hobie Fishing Worlds.
In 2012 I was invited as a member of the Hobie Fishing Team, and in 2013 was invited to participate in the Hobie Fishing Worlds 3 in Australia. The inaugural Hobie Bass Open on Kentucky Lake in 2014 was the first time targeting Largemouth Bass, where I finished 3rd.
The sport of kayak fishing has inspired me to challenge myself in tournaments throughout the USA and Canada, also travelling to Sweden, and Panama targeting salt water species. I have met many anglers and people involved in the sport from North America and several countries around the world. Well into my 60s, I hope to continue fishing from a kayak both competitively and recreational as long as my body will allow.
