Ron Champion – United States of America
Hobie Fishing Worlds 8 –

Ron Champion from Richmond Hill in Georgia, USA, is a seasoned Bass fishing, tournament angler, with almost 30 years of competitive fishing experience. Coming over to kayak fishing from bass boats, it did not take Champion long to make an impact in the kayak world. Since 2013 he has competed in over 200 kayak tournaments and over 100 of those have been top 10 finishes. He has won several major events fishing including the Hobie Bass Open Series & the KBF Trail Series in the USA.

In 2016 Champion won the Hobie Bass Open on Kentucky Lake and punched his ticket for Hobie Worlds 6 that was held in Leeville, Louisiana, in the USA.

On day one of the tournament Champion pedalled off from the Power-Pole Starting Line with the 47 other anglers from across the world. They were chasing Speckled Trout and Redfish in the Louisiana bayous, in cold and windy conditions. It was a tough first day, but Champion measured a legal ‘Red’ at 20 inches (50.8cm) and backed it up with a trout also at 20 (inches).

The situation was to get even tougher on day two, with the wind even stronger than the previous day, and the water temperature dropping dramatically, Champion was unable to increase his day one length, and it was going to require a huge day three for him to climb into the top ten.

He measured another Redfish on day three, but the 21 inches (53.34cm) was more of a ‘puppy’ than the ‘Bull Red’ that he needed, and with no trout to measure he finished in 17th place behind Steve Lessard (USA) in his first world championship.

In 2018 Champion won the Mike Iaconelli Celebrity Pro-Am event in New Jersey, USA, securing his spot in Team USA for Hobie Worlds 8 in Queensland, Australia.

To be successful in tournament fishing Champion says, “You gotta (sic) have a strong foundation and that starts at home”.

Champion has been happily married for 11 years to his wife Chrissy. Together, they have two children, Branton age 12 and Makayla age 8. Champion’s family is his rock, the foundation that keeps him strong and competitive.

“I cannot wait to travel to Australia and see all the beautiful sites and visit their beautiful country. I have so many friends that I get to see again, and that means as much to me as fishing this event. This ‘Big Ol’ Country Boy’ is ready to have a great time with all his Aussies brothers. This event creates friendships that last a lifetime and I’m so looking forward to meeting all the competitors from all over the world. Congratulations, to everyone who has qualified for Hobie Worlds 8. Travel safe and I will see you in Australia”.
